The Chocolate Challenge

The Chocolate Challenge was originally created by Fresh Tracks in 1998 for the marketing team at Pepsi, it has since been used by many hundreds of organisations including as the final challenge of the BBC Apprentice.

This chocolate team building activity simulates a complete business process from idea through design, production, marketing and promotion. This all takes place in a light-hearted and highly creative environment requiring co-operation, mental and artistic skills (and several kilos of chocolate!). Unlike more conventional team building exercises this challenge takes place indoors in a conference room and so is not dependent on weather, uniquely it works equally well for groups as small as six and as large as 600.

In this team building activity participants are divided into teams of between five and eight to undertake various creative and team exercises. These range from piping names on chef's hats (in chocolate, of course) and creating an original branded box of chocolates.

Team development activity

Using creative thinking, teams work through their product development tasks:

1. Teams must seek out a gap in the market and come up with an original product to fill it.

2. Teams then have just 90 minutes to turn their idea into reality and in this time they must:
- construct and decorate the box,
- make the chocolates from raw ingredients,
- calculate their profit margin,
- create a TV commercial

The finished products are later assessed for quality, profitability and originality with prizes awarded to the winning team. Each aspect of the teams performance can then be reviewed to draw out parallels with day-to-day working life.

The learning from this team building challenge can be increased through the use of a facilitator who will focus on creative thinking techniques leading into the activity, review progress throughout the exercises and debrief afterwards to ensure lessons learned can be matched to opportunities to improve performance in the workplace.
