Following
on from last month's newsletter highlighting Corporate
Responsibility Projects, we at Fresh Tracks have been considering
our corporate responsibilities and thinking of ways in which we can reduce
our carbon footprint and also support fairtrade.
Our
most popular team activity 'The
Chocolate Challenge' means that we buy hundreds of kilos of
chocolate every year. Like coffee and bananas, cocoa is grown on farms
in the developing world with 50% being produced in West Africa's Cote
d'Ivoire where "It's estimated that some 15,000 Malian children
work. Many are under 12 years of age, sold into indentured servitude for
$140, and work for $135 to $189 per year." (The
2000 US State Department Human Rights report.)
Consequently we have switched our chocolate supplier to a source that guarantees not to use forced child labour, and the chocolate is better than ever. If you'd like to eat chocolate with a clear conscience click here to visit the 'Stop The Traffik' website for a list of products and outlets.
