Do Teams Work?

Fresh Tracks Team Talk - September 2008

Them & Us

Your organisation may not have a blame culture but, particularly in these difficult times, few can honestly claim that there hasn't been any rivalry within their business. Sales teams might question the production department's willingness to meet their orders. And a moment talking to the production team may reveal some frustration with sale's disregard for the realities of manufacture.

Firstly, it's worth considering different kinds of teams that can exist within an organisation;

Nurses and doctors, entrepreneurs and bankers, taxi drivers and the government: we are all guilty of 'them and us'. Within a business this attitude has a serious impact on performance. Working towards a shared goal is the essence of teamwork, yet all too often we spend our time and energy not co-operating but instead striving towards departmental achievements which are out of sync with the company's objectives.

Fresh Tracks has developed a brand new team building activity with this in mind - The Team Machine. The Team Machine requires small teams to work together as a group. Collaboration rather than competition is the key to success as teams construct giant mechanisms that - only when connected together correctly - result in a triumphant finale.

The challenge highlights the role that inter-departmental competition can have in causing confusion, delay and frustration. Equally, once the teams realise the value of co-operation they experience the positive impact of working together effectively as performance improves rapidly and success follows. There can be no better time to encourage teams to pull together.
