This gentle psychometric exercise aims to improve relationships
within teams and organisations. Co-operation and working in
harmony are key elements in the success of any organisation
- building and maintaining strong teams by utilising the varied
strengths of all its members mainly depends on the quality
of the relationships within that team. It is the people and
the way they relate to each other that will dictate the degree
of success achieved and the SDI® (Strength Deployment
Inventory®) can have an immediate and long lasting impact
on improving the quality of these relationships.
The SDI® is a self discovery tool which helps individuals
identify their personal strengths in relating to others, and
suggests ways that an individual's personal strengths may
be used to build productive relationships with others. The
SDI can assist in creating organisations in which everyone
feels open to give, receive and develop new ideas which, in
turn, encourages creativity, increases mutual respect and
keeps energy levels high.
The SDI® is a paper-based exercise in which participants
are presented with a series of statements and asked to allocate
points depending on how they feel about the statement. At
the end of the series of statements, a personal score enables
participants to plot their results on a coloured chart.
Results include motivational values as well as preferences
for dealing with/preventing conflict. By relating to people
in a way that respects their motivations, you increase the
chance that any potential conflict will be prevented. However,
with early recognition interpersonal conflict, when managed
correctly, can contribute to creative solutions and stronger
relationships.
The results for the whole team can be combined to show the
range of strengths and values across the group, presented
graphically and so easily understood by the whole team. There
are no "right" or "wrong" answers - the
SDI should be seen as an inventory for tacking stock of motivational
values which are the basis for how an individual feels and
acts in different situations.
After individual participants have completed their inventories,
a facilitated discussion examines how to use these strengths
effectively to improve working or personal relationships with
others.
An SDI® can show clearly why certain people have the
impact on us they do and how we may be impacting on them.
Participants also learn how to recognise issues in relationships
and how to communicate in more flexible and effective ways.
