An Unlikely Leadership Truth

June 20, 2019

Way back in March 2016 we wrote about the appeal of maverick leaders. At that time Barak Obama was US president, David Cameron was UK Prime Minister and the Zika virus was striking fear into travellers.

Without wishing to support either Boris Johnson or Donald Trump we speculated that their maverick appeal could overcome their known weaknesses to put them in the lead roles. It seems our theory still stands, despite further exposure of the character traits of both men, they are somehow winning votes.

As leaders should we be encouraged or disheartened by this apparent truth? It is encouraging to know that despite our faults and we all have them, people will still support us and it certainly proves the premise that leaders need both wisdom and charisma.

We will leave it to others to argue why we should be concerned.
