No one wants to work for a bad boss, so try this test to measure your manager, or if you dare to quantify your own leadership qualities.
Score each of the following out of 5, from 1 low to 5 high.
As a team leader:
How much do you trust your team to act upon your instructions?
To what extent can every member of your team articulate your vision?
Do you have an ambition for each member of your team’s careers?
Do you spend at least an hour one to one, each week, with every team member?
Does your team know your opinion on business issues?
Do you publicly set unambiguous, achievable weekly goals for the team?
If you are a leader and scored 4 or 5 for all of the above, there’s a good chance you are deluded. Humility is one of the greatest qualities a leader can possess, alongside self awareness. These are tough standards for a manager to achieve, try the test again and be ruthlessly honest with yourself. An overall score of over 15 suggests you are in the same class as most managers, above 20 and you are an elite performer.
Don’t be disheartened though, instead spend a moment planning your week ahead with the intention of raising your score by one or two points, keep at it for at least six weeks and the chances are you’ll be amongst the elite within two months.
