Many have predicted dramatic change ahead for the careers of millennials and our children. What we’ve neglected to notice is that in 20 years those of us who have now mastered their chosen profession will still be working, but their jobs will be very different at best and more likely extinct.
Do you find that the more time saving devices and strategies you adopt, the more responsibility you take on? 20 years ago we looked forward to ‘Tomorrow’s World’ in which we’d have less to do and more time to relax. Reality is very different for many.
Understandably most of us would rather avoid conflict with colleagues. Our experience confirms that it’s rare that conflict within teams leads to a positive outcome.
Always eat the same food? Go to the same shop? – why not renergise yourself by doing it differently ….
For years robots have been building cars and assembling televisions. In fact, the first robot was designed by Leonardo Da Vinci as far back as 1515. More recently in his June 2013 TED Talk, Andrew McAfee suggests that within a few years droids will take the majority of our jobs.
I’m not talking about physical movement although that is important in meetings. I’m talking about feeling moved, emotionally.
Tears, passion even laughter can all be hallmarks of an effective meeting, much as they are in literature or drama. In the same way that we find ourselves binge watching a thrilling box set, a well led meeting will attract attendees. They will turn up early, well prepared and keen to engage. Does this sound like your business meetings?
Requests for feedback into my inbox have risen considerably recently. Invariably an email or a text will request my opinion for a product, service or even just a single phone call! This is frustrating and ironically can turn me off the organisation concerned.
How many conversations will you have today? You’ll probably attend at least one meeting, drink a coffee with a friend, make a few phone calls and maybe interview a new team member.
It’s generally accepted that team-based working is preferable to individuals serving a single line manager, but what evidence supports this?
